Barack Obama on New Unemployment Figures and Job Losses

It's time to focus on what matters.  Palin should not distract us from where the election will be won or lost: the economy.

The unemployment rate soared to a nearly five-year high in August as employers trimmed jobs for the eighth straight month, the government reported Friday.

The unemployment rate rose to 6.1%, the highest level since September 2003. That's up from 5.7% in July and 4.7% a year ago.

In addition, the economy suffered a net loss of 84,000 jobs in August, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, compared to a revised reading of a 60,000 job loss in July.

The U.S. economy has lost 605,000 jobs so far this year.

Barack Obama on the report

Today's jobs report is a reminder of what's at stake in this election - John McCain showed last night that he is intent on continuing the economic policies that just this year have caused the American economy to lose 605,000 jobs.  John McCain may believe that the fundamentals of our economy are `strong,' but the working men and women I meet every day are working harder for less, the typical working age family's income is down $2,000 since George Bush took office, and their purchasing power is as low as it's been in a decade.  John McCain's answer is more of the same:  $200 billion in tax cuts to big corporations and oil companies, and not one dime of tax relief to more than 100 million middle-class families. If I am President, I will cut taxes for 95% of all working families and provide an immediate $50 billion to struggling states so that they don't have to cut back on health care and education and can rebuild roads and schools. That's the change working families need right now.

It's the economy, not Palin, stupid!

Re: Barack Obama on New (2.00 / 2)

But it's important for Palin to be stopped. Obama doesn't have to do it, the media will. But they have to have surrogates that are competent enough to be hardasses while still keeping their distance from Obama.

My suggestion would be Wasserman. I've never seen anyone quite as effective at the sort of incredulous Ann Coulter-ish tone she does. She doesn't have real ties to Obama, she can legitimately say she's doing it because she's tired of Hillary's name being thrown around.

Horrible news (2.00 / 3)

It's sad that I see these unemployment rate reports as good for Obama, when they're just a sad state of affairs overall.

That said, Obama will actually do something about these problems, while McCain wants the joblessness rate high so it pushes military enrollment.

I don't think McCain wants unemployment to rise. (2.00 / 1)

He just doesn't care - its not personal.

Republicans are so enamoured with profitmaking that they don't see that US businesses as well as others should be encouraged to employ in the US, especially core competencies.

I do see McCain and the GOP as being so anti-union that they would rather see jobs go overseas than go to unionized workers. That desire is behind a lot of privatization of government jobs too. Its a continuation of the struggles of the past, they feel that they have won and that the middle class are pretenders to the aspirations of the rich, who don't deserve the wages they are making because they are not "owners". (i.e. Bush's ownership society, in which jobs are replaced by small businesses.. impossible because of the inherent inefficiency as long as the rush towards specialization continues.. thats what is driving all the mergers.. small businesses can't survive in their niches in such a cutthroat, "efficient" environment..

The only way out of this is to start praising the merits of SLACK.. seriously...

Rec'd (2.00 / 2)

You're right.  It's about jobs and houses.

Unless you're McCain, then it's about "real estate investments".  Was anyone else appalled by that line in his speech last night?

No, it makes sense.. (2.00 / 2)

I think that in ten or twenty years it will be obvious that we are headed towards a society where most wealth will be inherited.. from investments. Productivity and employment are mutually antagonistic. The more productive a business is, the fewer workers it needs to do a given job. That is the goal of technology, to make business more profitable. The best way to do that is by replacing people with technology.

Thats why America is a world leader, its because we are very good at this. Thats why the economy can be "booming" and people are still losing jobs like crazy. The two are really not connected, if anything, its the opposite. Of course, business also needs people to buy its products, so something has to give, eventually.

Exporting is a good strategy, as far as domestic sales, luxury goods have been stronger in some ways, but now even they are struggling. If the economy implodes, selling luxury products will only take you so far.

Re: No, it makes sense.. (2.00 / 1)

While that may be true, most of the people I know don't have "real estate investments".  We have homes for our families to live in.  Just one.  More shelter than investment, know what I mean?

Re: Rec'd (2.00 / 1)

If you are suggesting that John McCain, who had only one investment when he was a POW in the infamous real estate known as the Hanoi Hilton, only cares about real estate investments then you are unpatriotic and entirely accurate. Kudos, and appalled is an understatement.

Obama Needs To Focus on the Economy (none / 0)

McCain wants to talk about terrorism, Palin and what a war hero he is. Obama needs to focus on the economy.
